From Corrections Fatigue to Fulfillment™

This foundational training is offered as an all-day (8-hour) course. It is also offered as a 4-day Instructor Training, so that an agency’s instructors can become licensed to offer the 1-day training to staff at their agency. Click HERE for a brochure, and also HERE for a flyer.

The purpose of the course From Corrections Fatigue to Fulfillment™ (CF2F) is to educate corrections professionals on the nature of Corrections Fatigue, its facets and its precursors, and to present strategies for deterring it and for boosting staff well-being and professional growth, resulting in Corrections Fulfillment. The course includes the following components:

  1. Definition and exploration of inherent wellness-related challenges of corrections work.
  2. Examination of strategies to counter or prevent Corrections Fatigue and its effects both individually and organizationally.
  3. Identification of individual and organizational strategies to pursue professional satisfaction, and to increase resilience and even post-traumatic growth in the midst of often persistent adversity encountered in corrections work.

The CF2F course is now offered in SIX customized versions, for: (1) correctional institution (prison and jail) staff, (2) community supervisionprobation and/or parole staff, (3) juvenile justice institution staff, (4) juvenile justice community supervision staff, (5) staff working with sex offenders in any capacity and setting, and (6) new recruits/hires.

The International Association of Correctional Training Personnel awarded the CF2F course the 2016 Commercial Program Award of Excellence.

Workshops

From Corrections Fatigue to Fulfillment

The purpose of this all-day course is to educate corrections professionals on the nature of Corrections Fatigue, its facets and its precursors, and to present strategies for deterring it and for boosting staff well-being and professional growth, resulting in Corrections Fulfillment. The course includes the following components:

1. Definition and exploration of inherent wellness-related challenges of corrections work.
2. Examination of strategies to counter or prevent Corrections Fatigue and its effects both individually and organizationally.
3. Identification of individual and organizational strategies to pursue positive growth and professional satisfaction, and to increase resilience and even post-traumatic growth in the midst of often persistent adversity encountered in corrections work.

Critical Incident Responder Training

Corrections professionals who serve on Critical Incident Response teams are repeatedly exposed both directly and indirectly to significant amounts of distress suffered by their coworkers due to Critical Incidents. This course presents a summary of the latest evidence-informed trends for offering support to individuals exposed to traumatic events, including the provision of cognitive and behavioral strategies for promoting resilience and even post-traumatic growth following Critical Incidents. The training also addresses related issues of self-care for the Responders themselves. This is offered as a 4-hour course and also as an all-day course.

Professional Boundaries for Corrections Professionals

Why would corrections staff, who are well versed in administrative regulations and consequences to infractions, choose to destroy their careers by bringing contraband to work or risk a felony conviction for sexual involvement with justice-involved individuals in their care? This workshop describes gradual changes in staff’s core beliefs that can lead to their sliding down the slippery slope of professional misconduct. It also presents factors in the workplace environment that may contribute to the increase of some staff’s emotional vulnerability to boundary violations. The workshop offers suggestions to corrections professionals to help prevent and/or intervene in the case of ethical violations. This is offered as a 4-hour course.

Resilience in the Face of Traumatic Exposure in Corrections

Corrections professionals are routinely exposed to Critical Incidents that involve violence, injury or death, or the credible and serious threat of such. These incidents are potentially traumatizing, and possibly leading to staff developing symptoms of post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression. On the other hand, corrections professionals may also experience increases in their resilience and positive changesas a result of their dealing with Critical Incidents. This training presents groundbreaking research conducted by Desert Waters on post-traumatic symptoms, depression and anxiety among corrections professionals, and describes the effects of psychological trauma on corrections staff’s work performance, health and functioning. Additionally, it presents cognitive and behavioral practices that help increase resilience and that can counter the negative effects of exposure to Critical Incidents both preventatively and also following exposure to such incidents. This is offered as a 4-hour course.

Skillful Communication

The style and content of verbal exchanges and the accompanying attitudes are correctional staff’s most critical tools when interacting with justice-involved individuals and other staff. Skillful listening and communicating can help increase others’ motivation, work performance, team work and problem solving. This workshop teaches active listening skills, assertive communication, problem-solving strategies, and communication tools of high-performance teams. This is offered as a 7-hour (all day) course.

Skillful Conflict Management

Corrections professionals are routinely confronted with conflict. Conflict may occur between them and other staff, between them and justice-involved individuals they manage, or among such individuals. The way corrections professionals respond to conflict is critical, as it may make the difference between receiving disciplinary measures or not, between people getting injured or not, or between an issue getting resolved or not. This course describes underlying reasons why conflict occurs, and presents types of strategies for conflict resolution through interpersonal and cognitive skills. This is offered as a 4-hour course.

Skillful Self-control

Corrections professionals are routinely confronted with interactions and scenarios that can arouse frustration and anger. Managing these emotions and related thoughts skillfully can make the difference between de-escalating situations or aggravating them, and between getting through an incident relatively calmly versus repeatedly creating the stress response in their bodies. This course presents material on the function and types of anger, neurological underpinnings of the “fight” response, and thought patterns that fuel anger. It also describes cognitive strategies to de-escalate anger and remain in control of the situation, while also modeling that behavior to others around them. This is offered as a 4-hour course.

Staff Suicide

There is substantial evidence that, as is the case with other branches of law enforcement, the suicide rate of correctional staff is higher than that of the general population. This workshop describes some of the possible contributors to corrections staff’s high suicide rate, strategies to create a workplace culture that helps prevent staff suicides, ways to intervene when staff members appear to be reaching a breaking point, and ways for administration to effectively and compassionately address the fallout that results from a completed staff suicide. This is offered as a 4-hour course.

Resilient Supervisor™ Course

The Resilient Supervisor™ Course

This is a highly interactive, outcome-focused, 4-day supervisor development course. It presents research-supported information on attitudes and behaviors that promote resilience and teaches practical ways for its implementation in correctional environments. The course aims to enhance supervisors’ personal Corrections Resilience and to increase their capacity to lead their direct reports into the adoption and application of resilience-building behaviors.
